VOTE Launches Paralegal Training Course
 
Entrance Test Wednesday October 20th, 2010 6pm at 1212 St. Bernard Avenue.
 
This week VOTE will begin accepting applicants for its FREE Paralegal Training Course. Space is limited.  An entrance test will be given for all interested applicants. The test will be used as an assessment tool and scores will not necessarily prevent applicants from being accepted into the course.
 
The Paralegal Training Course is a 10 week program to train Formerly Incarcerated Persons, their family members and their community on legal skills such as legal research, procedure and writing. The classes will be taught by Formerly Incarcerated Persons who have previously or are currently practicing as paralegals. Guest instructors will include local attorneys and other legal professionals.  Classes are two evenings per week for three hours per class. Regular attendance for all accepted participants is required in order to keep their place in the class.

Street Law Class Begins:
Wednesday January 27th, 2010
 
 
VOTE is proud to announce the beginning of our three tier legal training program this Wednesday January 27th, 2010 at 6:30pm. We will begin with a basic Street Law Class that will teach participants about what to do:
 

  • when you encounter the police,
  • if you or a loved one is arrested,
  • when you have to go to court

 
Wednesday's session will be held at
the NOPLAY Center of  the Youth Empowerment Project

Join us this Friday, January 22nd for a special screening of "The Exonerated."
at Fair Grinds Coffee Shop-  Upstairs (3133 Ponce de Leon)
at 7pm 
 
The Anti-Racism Working Group in partnership with Voice of the Ex-Offender (V.O.T.E) will be screening The Exonerated, a movie based on the true stories of six different people who were wrongfully imprisoned and their experiences of exoneration. After the movie organizers from VOTE will be there to talk about their experiences of exoneration and the important work the VOTE does.

This movie night is a fund-raiser to support V.O.T.E., so we will be collecting donations however big or small. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability to donate, BRING YOUR FRIENDS!

V.O.T.E. is an organization dedicated to building the political power of people most impacted by the criminal justice system, especially formerly incarcerated persons (FIPs), their families and loved ones through voter registration, economic empowerment, legal education, community education, and leadership development.

It's official, as of September 15th, 2009, we have a brand new space! We have moved from our Central City location to a new building in the 9th Ward's Bywater neighborhood. 
We are sharing the building with two of our sister organizations, the Innocence Project of New Orleans (IPNO) and Resurrection After Exoneration (RAE).
We hope to create a space where our work will take off and flourish.
